We participate in trade shows both in Japan and abroad, and deliver intellectual property strategies that protect technology, design, and brands directly to the front lines of business operations.

EVORIX Intellectual Property Law Firm (EVORIX Co., Ltd.) participates in trade shows that bring together startups, manufacturers, and IT companies, providing practical intellectual property information through free consultations at our booth and presentations at seminars. Under the concept of “Turn That Technology into a Business Strength,” we introduced five key themes: securing intellectual property rights for cutting-edge technologies; comprehensive protection of technology, design, and brands; risk management for commercialization and co-creation; application strategies with an eye toward global expansion; and AI-drafted applications reviewed by patent attorneys. We distributed six types of materials, including the “Japan Patent Application Guidebook 2026” and the “Foreign Trademark Application Guidebook 2026.” At the event, which drew over 110,000 visitors over four days, we received numerous inquiries from development managers at AI, IoT, and manufacturing companies.

We conducted an on-site visit to one of the world’s largest industrial technology trade shows to examine the latest technology trends—such as Industry 4.0, AI, and hydrogen—as well as the intellectual property strategies (risks of loss of novelty, imitation, and infringement of third-party patents) adopted by exhibiting companies targeting the European market. We are applying the insights gained from this visit to provide advance IP strategy advice to clients exhibiting at international trade shows.

## For Exhibitors and Visitors to Trade Shows | 3 Intellectual Property Checks Before Exhibiting

POINT 1

Public display at an exhibition constitutes a “loss of novelty”

As a general rule, patents and designs cannot be registered if they are exhibited, distributed, or demonstrated prior to filing an application. Be sure to file applications for any technologies or designs you plan to exhibit before the event begins. Japan’s exception provision (Article 30 of the Patent Act) is merely a remedy; some countries overseas do not offer such remedies.

POINT 2

Clearance of Third-Party Rights

Conducting a freedom-to-operate (FTO) search before the exhibition to verify that the products and services you plan to exhibit do not infringe on other companies’ patents, trademarks, or designs will help you avoid warnings and disputes at the venue.

POINT 3

Countermeasures Against Counterfeiting and Information Management

Before heading to the venue, be sure to establish rules regarding photography and taking samples home, prepare an NDA, and define the line between information that can be disclosed and information (trade secrets) that must remain confidential.
